Boeing
Mobile Logbook
Project Details
Overview: Successfully led a team of 2 other UX designers in creating an iPad app for pilots, flight attendants, & mechanics. The app allows these personas to seamlessly communicate with each other about maintenance issues for an aircraft. The digital mobile logbook allowed user to enter data 1.5x faster than its paper counterpart during testing, This Translates to a $68,000 cost savings per maintenance technician per year. In addition to this, data entered is more accurate and more complete because of auto-suggestions and required fields.
The Problem: Communication between pilots, flight attendants, & mechanics is not efficient - they use paper logbooks which require physical handoff when the plane lands and before it takes off, as well as (obviously) manual entry. This inefficiency can cause time delays or missing or illegible info.

The Process
I joined this project after a few months of work had already been completed. The team needed help with direction and decision making, and I was asked for help based on a referral from a different Boeing project.
I helped to:
I helped to:
- Map out customer journeys for this fairly complex app with many decision points
- Organize user testing sessions with pilots, mechanics, and flight attendants
- Make changes to designs based on customer feedback, and design new features based on newly discovered user needs
- Define our UX design process
Solution
The “solution” in this case is a constantly evolving iOS app that allows for pilots, flight attendants, and mechanics to properly communicate the status of an aircraft and the complex and nuanced issues it might have. A pilot communicates any issues with an aircraft while flying or soon after landing to the mechanics, who in turn will make any necessary repairs and report them to be fixed. There is a constant open line of communication between these two personas, including when the plane is fueled, and when it is de-iced. The app ensures that everything is not only done correctly and communicated properly, but also that it is done effeciently so that there are minimal flight delays.
